Welcome

Selenkay Adventure Camp

Rustic & real camping adventure topped by authentic cultural encounters with the surrounding Maasai community.

The Selenkay Adventure Camp offers the real adventure camping experience and due to it’s lean infrastructure warrants for an exceptionally close biodiversity and wildlife experience.  During your stay you may also immerse into the authentic culture of the Maasai and experience fabulous night game drives under the magic spell of the African starlit sky.

The Camp offers the same high quality wildlife safari experience provided by the top-end safari camps, with game viewing in 4×4 safari vehicles escorted by top class Maasai guides and spotters in an exclusive wildlife conservancy far away from the tourist minibuses. However, this is at a hugely reduced price, achieved by staying in a more basic adventure camp, which is more like “real camping” instead of the luxury accommodation of the expensive up-market tented lodges.

Safari accommodation is in small dome tents which accommodate 2 adults (or can fit one child with 2 adults). The tents are 6 ft high and 10ft x 10ft square, and are insect-proof.

Each tent has its own private bathroom in a cubicle located immediately behind the tent with flush toilet, wash basin and safari shower. Clients bring their own sleeping bag and a towel (or these can be hired at a small fee) and sleep on comfortable mattresses on the tent floor. Pillows are provided.

The safari camp has staff on site 24 hours per day and all their services are included in the price

Location

Selenkay Conservancy

10 miles north of the boundary of Amboseli Park is the Selenkay Conservancy. Selenkay shares the same eco-system as Amboseli and is established on 12,500 acres of land within the nearly 200,000 acres Eselenkei Group Ranch leased from the local Maasai by Gamewatchers Safaris with the aim of protecting the wildlife habitat and encouraging wildlife conservation as an alternative to farming as a means for the local population to earn a living.

Biodiversity

Amboseli Ecosystem

The Amboseli region is most famous for its elephant population; over 1,000 live in the fragile eco-system, and records show them to be amongst some of the biggest elephants in Africa.

Elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hartebeest and gazelle all migrate with the rains in search of green flushes and draw back to permanent swamps in search of water and pasture each dry season. Here densely packed herds attract an array of predators, including lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena.

The dry bush country harbours giraffe, eland, gerenuk, lesser kudu and a host of smaller animals. Add a rich variety of birds and the dramatic backdrop of Kilimanjaro and it is no wonder that Amboseli is one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes, and a favorite tourist destination.

Selkenkay Adventure Camp

The tenting experience at Adventure Camp was just fine and actually quite peaceful. Driver/guide and camp staff were excellent! Food was fantastic! We saw abundant wildlife in Selenkay and nearby Amboseli – lions every day! One of our highlights was the included visit to a nearby Maasai village. The people were so friendly and welcoming and we learned a lot about their culture. We highly recommend this camp!

Selkenkay Adventure Camp

We spent 3 nights here and then 3 nights at the other adventure camp in Ol Kinyei. Our gamewatchers agent Sally was fantastic from when we first made enquiries and very supportive through all the organisation. The gamewatchers adventure camps were completely amazing – lovely people, comfortable tents, great food (including vegetarian and other options) and wonderful animals in abundance! The conservancy concept works brilliantly, the vehicles were better than any others we saw, (open sided and comfortable) and it was so lovely getting to spend time with those running the camps and learning about their culture. Walking safaris and trip to Maasai village really special and ‘non-touristy’,All the organisation was seamless and we cannot recommend the company and the camps highly enough.

Great staff, incredible animals, talented spotter, John and driver, Julius. Friendly and interesting camp staff, Jackson. Wouldn’t change a thing about our trip and would recommend Porini to anyone wanting to do a Kenya safari. Really top-notch organization! See the Maasai world and the Big 5, small 5, ugly 5 with Porini. You will have a great time. We did!

Selkenkay Adventure Camp

First time safari for us and not only met our (high) expectations, but actually exceeded them! Everything was perfect, from game drives and sightings to camp/food/guiding. All the staff (Massai) were great and very informed about their land, the wildlife etc. Cannot fault our experience and if travelling to Kenya again (which we will) we will definitely book with them again. Thankyou to everyone for the most amazing adventure!
