Ol Kinyei Conservancy was the first community conservancy of it’s kind set up in 2005 and every tent pays to secure 700 acres with the vehicles being limited to no more than 1 vehicle to 1400 acres.

The guests staying at the Porini Camps have exclusive access to this conservancy. There is a resident lion pride of over 20 animals and several leopards also have their territories within the Ol Kinyei conservancy and are often sighted by guests from Porini Mara Camp on evening or early morning drives. Cheetahs are frequently seen and it is not rare to come across large numbers of giraffe as well as Cape buffalo and elephants.

This is a great location from which to observe the Great Wildebeest Migration coming in from Tanzania generally from July to October. Ol Kinyei is also a key protected habitat for another Wildebeest Migration called the Loita Migration which used to calve in the Loita Plains north of Ol Kinyei, however, unfortunately due to fencing and land use change their traditional breeding grounds are no longer available. The calving of the Loita Migration typically takes place during February and March when the plains of the conservancy are teeming with wildebeest and a lot of “predator action”.

Location

Ol Kinyei Conservancy

This 18,700 acre Kenyan wildlife conservancy is on a tranche of land belonging to a Maasai community who leased it to Porini Camps to be set aside for the purposes of wildlife conservation.

Ol Kinyei Conservancy is home to two safari camps, the Porini Mara Camp and Porini Cheetah Camp and the Ol Kinyei Safari Cottages. The is also one small mobile camp called the Porini Bush Camp (high season only). Apart from our eco-camps, no other tourist vehicles are allowed into the Conservancy so our guests have the thousands of acres in the conservancy to themselves but we are also able to have game drives in the neighbouring Naboisho Conservancy which we also support by contributing to the land lease payments to the local Maasai community.

Biodiversity

Maasai Mara Ecosystem

The Maasai Mara ecosystem is home to approximately 25% of Kenya’s wildlife. It hosts more than 95 mammal species besides being a recognized Important Bird Area (IBA) with 550 bird species.

Presently, about 70 per cent of this wildlife is living outside the gazetted conservation area -the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Adjacent land owned by local communities form key dispersal and diversity areas.

A wonderful start to our Safari. Waking up in the morning to bush buck grazing round the tent. A great location, so peaceful and exclusive. (Just remember to padlock the tent flaps against marauding monkeys!). Amazing guides (Jackson and Leshan). Wildlife was everywhere and thankfully hardly any other vehicles as the camp is in a conservancy. Unforgettable sighting of “Spot” the leopard on our first drive. Comfortable accommodation and good food.

Second time using Porini Camps, this time at the Mara camp. The smallest Porini Camp in terms of the number of tents – just six – but still big on service. From our driver Geoff, to the Camp manager Jimmy and everyone in between, we were made to feel very special. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone. The food was excellent throughout both at the mess tent and out on Game Drives. Tents are very comfortable but be aware that the animals like the grass around the edges and love to eat in the early hours of the morning! Our midnight ‘snacker’ was a Hippo called Simon!! Another brilliant visit and have already recommended to friends. Thanks one and all!

An outstanding experience, the accommodation is as good as a 5* hotel but in the wild, the food fantastic and the service second to none.
Our driver Jeffrey and spotter Leshan were fabulous and expert at finding the wildlife.
All the staff made our experience truly memorable. We would highly recommend this camp.
