The small and intimate Porini Giraffe Camp is in a forested area of Camphor bush (African Wild Sage or called Leleshwa in Kenya) and Yellow Bark Acacia along the Ripole River in the Mara Ripoi Conservancy. This exclusive game-rich 13,500-acre wildlife conservancy is comprised of beautiful hills, forests, and open plains and is home to a large abundance of wildlife including the big cats. The conservancy connects to Siana conservancy and then directly to the Mara Reserve and so allowing free movement of wildlife from the Reserve as well as through a wildlife corridor along the Ripole River to Ol Kinyei Conservancy.

Guests will also have access to the Mara Reserve and also Ol Kinyei Conservancy. Porini Giraffe Camp has 8 guest tents and offers a personal and authentic experience for a safari in the Maasai Mara, providing a great alternative to the
large mass-market tourist lodges. The camp has a dining tent and separate comfortable lounge all located along the Ripole river. The camp provides guests with the opportunity to stay at a truly eco-friendly bush camp where there are no permanent structures and there is minimal impact on the environment. This 13,500-acre Kenyan wildlife conservancy is on a tranche of land belonging to a Maasai community who leased it for the purposes of wildlife conservation. Mara Ripoi Conservancy is home to only 3 small camps (including Porini as a founding member) and no other tourist vehicles are allowed into the
Conservancy, so our guests have thousands of acres in the conservancy to themselves.

Location

Mara Ripoi Conservancy

Gamewatchers Safaris is one of the founders of this newly formed 13,500 acre wildlife conservancy which is on a tranche of land belonging to about 1,600 Maasai individuals from the community who have leased it for 25 years so that the area can be conserved as protected habitat for the teeming wildlife. The conservancy has a large abundance of wildlife, especially Maasai giraffe and is
an important area for wildebeest and the big cats. The conservancy connects onto Siana conservancy and then directly to the Mara Reserve, allowing free movement of wildlife from the Reserve as well as across a wildlife corridor along the Ripole River to Ol Kinyei Conservancy.

Biodiversity

Maasai Mara Ecosystem

The Maasai Mara ecosystem is home to approximately 25% of Kenya’s wildlife. It hosts more than 95 mammal species besides being a recognized Important Bird Area (IBA) with 550 bird species.

Presently, about 70 per cent of this wildlife is living outside the gazetted conservation area -the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Adjacent land owned by local communities form key dispersal and diversity areas.

Our Porini Camps in the Mara are adjacent to the reserve in exceptionally rich wildlife areas where tourism density is controlled and deliberately kept very low (1 guest tent to 700 acres) and as such there is no need to visit the Mara National Reserve to view lions,  cheetahs, leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, hippo etc.  Stays in our camps in the conservancies also include extra activities like night game drives, guided bush walks, bush meals and sundowners. However, should guests wish to include a visit to the reserve this can be pre-booked with the additional park entry charge applicable (currently $80 per person for 2023, $100 per person for 2024 low season & $200 per person for 2024 high season, subject to change). As the park entry tickets for the reserve must be booked and paid for in advance, this option needs to be confirmed at time of booking.
